ERP and CRM for Distribution and Wholesale
Dynamics 365 Business Central or Supply Chain Management for stock, purchasing, warehouses and customer pricing, with Dynamics 365 Sales working on the same customer and order data.
Solzet implements ERP and CRM for distribution and wholesale companies on Microsoft Dynamics 365. Business Central is Microsoft's ERP for small and mid-sized organizations, covering finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehouse management and planning in one system, and it suits most distributors with one or a few warehouses. Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management, part of Finance and Operations, suits larger distributors that need deep warehouse and transportation management, procurement and sourcing, and master planning across several legal entities. Solzet scopes the ERP, the CRM and the data flow between them as one design, so a sales rep in Dynamics 365 Sales sees the same stock, prices and open orders as the warehouse.
What problems does an ERP solve for a distributor or wholesaler?
Distribution margins are thin, so the pains that matter are the ones that leak money quietly. Stock is right in one system and wrong in another, so sales promise what the warehouse cannot ship. Purchasing reorders by feel, so one item sits for a year while another runs out every month. Customer prices, discounts and rebates live in spreadsheets, and the invoice rarely matches what the rep quoted. Warehouse staff pick from paper lists, and nobody knows a pallet is missing until a customer calls.
Each of those maps to a standard ERP area. Inventory and warehouse management give one stock figure per location and item. Purchasing and planning turn sales history and open orders into suggested purchase orders. Sales pricing holds customer price lists and discounts once, so the quote, the order and the invoice agree. Finance closes the loop: receivables, payables and the general ledger post from the same documents rather than from a nightly export. In Business Central those areas are part of one product. In Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management they go deeper, with warehouse and transportation management, procurement and sourcing, master planning and product information management, and Dynamics 365 Finance behind them.
Business Central or Supply Chain Management: which fits a distributor of your size?
Buyers usually start with which product is better. The useful question is which product fits the size and complexity of the operation. A distributor with one legal entity, a few warehouses and standard pricing is usually well served by Business Central. A group with several legal entities, high-volume warehouses, transport planning or operations in several countries usually needs Supply Chain Management and Dynamics 365 Finance in Finance and Operations. Where you sit on that line is decided in a fit workshop against your real order lines and stock movements, not in a sales demo.
The rule of thumb we start from, then test against your own volumes:
| Signal | Business Central | Finance and Operations |
|---|---|---|
| Company size | Small and mid-sized distributors | Larger, complex, multi-entity distribution groups |
| Warehousing | Inventory and warehouse management for one or several warehouses | Warehouse and transportation management in Supply Chain Management for high-volume, multi-site operations |
| Purchasing and planning | Purchasing and planning for reorder suggestions | Procurement and sourcing and master planning across sites and entities |
| Finance | Standard finance in the same system | Dynamics 365 Finance, including multi-country finance |
| CRM integration | Dataverse connection to Dynamics 365 Sales, virtual tables | Dual-write and virtual entities to Dynamics 365 Sales |
| Extension model | AL extensions in Visual Studio Code | X++ in Visual Studio |
| Typical legacy source | Dynamics NAV, Dynamics GP, 1C | Dynamics AX 2012, AX 2009 |
How does the CRM connect to the ERP for a distributor?
Sales teams in distribution live on customer history, stock and credit. When the CRM and the ERP are two islands, reps phone the warehouse to check availability and finance chases orders that were booked while the customer was on hold. Solzet works on both sides. Business Central connects to Dataverse through the Dataverse connection, which is also the route for integrating with Dynamics 365 Sales, and the Business Central Virtual Table app shows Business Central data in Dataverse without copying it. Finance and Operations uses dual-write for near-real-time, two-way sync with customer engagement apps, and virtual entities for data that should stay in the ERP.
The result is one customer, one item and one order seen the same way by sales, the warehouse and finance. Our Dynamics 365 consulting page covers the Sales and Customer Service side, and Dynamics 365 for manufacturing covers distributors that also assemble or produce.
Who is this for, and who is it not for?
This page is for distributors and wholesalers that sell physical goods from stock to business customers: building materials, food and beverage, pharmaceuticals, electrical and industrial parts, and consumer goods. Business Central fits small and mid-sized companies that want finance, inventory, purchasing and warehouse in one cloud system. Finance and Operations fits larger organizations with several legal entities, deep supply chain needs, or retail operations on Commerce. If you also run Dynamics 365 Customer Engagement, both connect to it through Dataverse.
It is a poorer match if you sell mostly to consumers through shops and a web store, where ERP, commerce and CRM for retail is the better starting point, or if you want SAP, Oracle or Odoo implemented: Solzet implements Microsoft ERP, and moves distributors from those systems to Business Central or Finance and Operations instead. Back to all industries.
How does a distribution ERP project run, and what about migration?
A distribution rollout is decided by data more than by configuration. It runs in five steps: a fit workshop on your real order, stock and pricing data; a design of items, units of measure, locations, price lists and customer terms; configuration, with AL or X++ extensions only where the standard product leaves a real gap; migration of open orders, stock balances, customers, vendors and history; and a cutover planned around a stock count, so the opening balance in the new system is one the warehouse signed.
Distributors on Dynamics NAV upgrade to Business Central on-premises first and then switch to Business Central online with the cloud migration tool. Dynamics GP data from GP 2015 and later can be migrated to Business Central online with the built-in cloud migration tool. Companies on 1C move with a mapped migration of masters, open documents and balances. The timing matters: Dynamics NAV 2018 extended support ends on 11 January 2028, and Dynamics GP support for enhancements, tax updates and technical support ends on 31 December 2029. Our migration to Business Central page covers the method.
What are the common use cases?
What do buyers ask us?
Does Solzet implement Business Central for distribution and wholesale companies?
Yes. Solzet implements Dynamics 365 Business Central for distributors and wholesalers, covering finance, sales, purchasing, inventory, warehouse management and planning, with AL extensions for the gaps the standard product leaves, integrations with web shops, EDI and carriers, and migrations from Dynamics NAV, Dynamics GP and 1C. For larger groups we implement Finance and Operations with Supply Chain Management.
Business Central or Supply Chain Management: which does a distributor need?
It depends on size and complexity. Business Central fits small and mid-sized distributors with standard warehousing and pricing. Supply Chain Management, part of Finance and Operations, fits larger, multi-entity groups that need warehouse and transportation management, procurement and sourcing and master planning at scale. A fit workshop on your own order and stock data settles it.
Can Business Central connect to Dynamics 365 Sales for our sales reps?
Yes. Business Central connects to Dataverse through the Set up Dataverse connection assisted setup, with one-way or two-way synchronization, and that connection is the route for integrating with Dynamics 365 Sales. For data that should stay in Business Central, such as live stock, the Business Central Virtual Table app shows it in Dataverse as virtual tables without copying it.
Can Solzet migrate us from Dynamics NAV, Dynamics GP or 1C?
Yes. Dynamics NAV customers upgrade to Business Central on-premises first and then switch to Business Central online with the cloud migration tool. Dynamics GP data from GP 2015 and later can be migrated to Business Central online with the built-in cloud migration tool. From 1C we map and migrate masters, open documents and balances. In every case cutover is planned around a stock count.
Do we have to replace our CRM to get a new ERP?
Not necessarily. If you already run Dynamics 365 Sales, Business Central or Finance and Operations connects to it through Dataverse. If you run another CRM, we integrate it through APIs. Where the CRM is part of the problem too, Solzet scopes the CRM, the ERP and the data flow between them as one design.
Does Solzet work with distributors in Armenia?
Yes. Solzet is based in Yerevan and delivers the Business Central Armenian localization: AMD as the local currency, Armenian tax and statutory reporting, an Armenian chart of accounts, Armenian-language documents, and e-invoicing integration with the State Revenue Committee where applicable.
